The Call

A Call to Monasticism is an epic turning point if fully accepted. It can be like accepting a quest to find the Grail, or finding a road after being utterly lost on a hike. These analogies sound cliché, but they are apt.

Such a Call most often comes at a time when the world is clearly not working for an individual, or an individual is clearly not functioning well in the world. Generally, it takes a rock bottom moment, or a wall, to bring an adult to seek a completely new direction.

The Call can feel epic because it often comes as a relief from a bleakness, a desperation, and a helplessness that one feels when all that one does and strives for is ineffective or counter productive. This fatigue renders one open (and also vulnerable) to new directions. Sometimes, a Call to Monasticism is what is sensed.

Even if you haven’t had such a call, there’s no harmful or delusional mumbo jumbo here. There may be some good approaches to help you focus and be more effective in this noisy world. Take what ideas suit you.
